New policy not only improves emergency preparedness in schools, but also strengthens prevention through education
In January 2020, Alberta enacted the Protection of Students with Life-threatening Allergies Act, requiring schools to maintain stock epinephrine — life-saving medication that is not prescribed to anyone and can be administered in the event of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
This policy ensures that undesignated doses of epinephrine are kept onsite and readily accessible, enabling a prompt response during critical moments.
At the same time this policy was introduced, Alberta saw a dramatic increase in anaphylaxis education. Completion rates for Food Allergy Canada’s anaphylaxis training course, AllergyAware.ca — designed specifically for teachers and school staff — rose by 700% in the year the legislation was enacted. The course equips educators, administrators, and support staff with the knowledge and confidence to recognize and respond to allergic reactions quickly and effectively.
In the years following implementation, training completion rates have remained significantly elevated, demonstrating sustained engagement and a long-term commitment to student safety.
“This legislation shows that policy can be a powerful catalyst — not only for improving emergency response, but also for driving meaningful education,” said Jennifer Gerdts, Executive Director at Food Allergy Canada. “When school staff are trained and prepared, they are better equipped to reduce risks, recognize early signs of a reaction, and act quickly. That ultimately helps prevent serious outcomes and creates safer environments for all students.”
Alberta schools now benefit from having stock epinephrine available onsite, but the impact of this legislation extends far beyond access to medication. By prompting widespread training and awareness, the policy is helping to build a culture of preparedness — one that can reduce the likelihood of reactions occurring in the first place.
Food Allergy Canada continues to advocate for policies that improve both access to life-saving medication and education on anaphylaxis management across the country.
